Background
The AOSA and SCST Boards are currently pursuing a number of initiatives to improve uniformity in seed testing.  One of these initiatives is to determine if multiple germination testing methods in the AOSA Rules for Testing Seeds results in a lack of uniformity in seed testing results.  Table 6A of the AOSA Rules contains germination testing procedures for 677 kinds; 430 species/kinds contain multiple germination testing procedures (substrate and/or temp.).

Laboratories are asked to select the methods they use and briefly explain why they are used.  Participation from all AOSA and SCST laboratories is extremely important in order to produce useful and relevant data.    Please submit one survey per laboratory. All responses will be evaluated anonymously.  The goal of this survey is to improve the AOSA Rules for Testing Seeds, so please answer truthfully and make the effort to participate in this important project.  Dr. Richard Payne with G&P Consulting Services has been retained to develop the surveys and analyze the results.

Surveys

  • Excel spreadsheet format
  • Approximately 25 species/kinds per individual survey
  • Begin with Poaceae (3 individual surveys).
  • Select the number of samples tested by lab using the drop-down menu.
  • Put an “x” in the appropriate box for substrate (key provided) and temperature used.
  • Option to indicate “other” if a method not currently listed in the AOSA Rules is used
  • Fill in days to first count and final count.
  • Fill in box for specific requirements (ex. light, KNO3).
  • Fill in box for specific procedures for fresh and dormant seed (ex. prechill temp. and days).
  • Please skip species your laboratory does not test.
  • Complete demographic questions using the drop down menus: region, lab type, type of testing conducted (regulatory, service, in-house, etc.), name of laboratory (optional).

Questions, comments and ideas for improving the surveys are welcomed and appreciated!
