 10/15/15 --- SCST Staffing Update

Greetings SCST Members,

I hope everyone is enjoying a reprieve from the hot summer days and welcoming in the cooler fall weather.

Things continue to be busy at the SCST Administrative Office along with the board and committees. Progress is underway for an exciting and action packed annual meeting scheduled to take place in June of 2016. Work is also underway planning for the 2017 and 2018 annual meetings. On this note, a new and noteworthy item for you to be on the look out for is a joint AOSA/SCST annual meeting website. We'll be sending you the details as soon as we have the link live and ready to roll.

The 2015 AOSA rules document is being updated and finalized. The CDs will be mailed out within the next two weeks.  If you have any questions on anything regarding the rules distribution process, please don't hesitate to let us know.

It is on that note that I want to welcome a new member to the SCST team.  Kelly Polzin has joined the staff at Western Skies Strategies and will be your new point person for all administrative functions within the association.  Your previous point of contact, Chris Heck, has taken a position at the National Association of Conservation Districts and we wish him all the best as he starts out on this new venture!  With the transition, we expect it to be seamless and of no interruption to any of the SCST administrative duties or processes.  Chris spent a considerable amount of time with Kelly leading up to the transition and we are confident with the WSS team now in place.  You may reach Kelly at: KPolzin@wssdc.com<mailto:KPolzin@wssdc.com> or (202) 870 -2412.  Also, you can always reach out to myself at: jess@wssdc.com<mailto:jess@wssdc.com> , 202-870-3867 or additional WSS staff member Kelly Fogarty at: kelly@wssdc.com<mailto:kelly@wssdc.com> or 202-870-3342.  As you can see, we have a full team in place and ready to assist you with anything you might need from the SCST Administrative Office.

We look forward to all that is ahead for the remainder of the year and a great 2016!

Sincerely,
Jess Peterson
Executive Director

10/8/15 --- 2016 Rules Proposal Deadline

Dear SCST Members,

Fall is here and so is the call for AOSA Rule proposals. The deadline for proposals is Thursday, October 15th, 2015. All of your hard work to prepare the rule proposals is greatly appreciated. It is this type of commitment that keeps our organizations going. Please have the proposals in by the deadline. The proposals go through a specific chain of events before they are presented to the membership. Late proposals disrupt this chain and create excess steps that are preventable. Late proposals do not need to be accepted and can be put off for the next cycle. Adherence to this deadline is greatly appreciated by all those involved in the review. If you have proposals ready to be submitted for review please send them to Mike Stahr (mgstahr@iastate.eduor fax to 515-294-8303. Guidelines for proposing Rules changes are on the AOSA website under the Rules Committee webpage, available on the following link, http://www.aosaseed.com/rules_committee<http://seedtechnology.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a32b1e0bada4e99a82cf47e6d&id=aebde9af08&e=995c711e81>

2-27-15 ---- Federal Seed School Annual Seed Analyst Workshop

The USDA Seed Regulatory and Testing Division will host its annual Seed Analyst Workshop at its facility in Gastonia, August 10-12, 2015.

The three day workshop will focus on purity and identification of similar crop and weed species, with emphasis on identification of noxious-weed seeds.  Other topics such as the uniform blowing procedure, calculations for seed testing, TZ cutting and evaluations, and pure seed definitions will also be covered.

Depending upon interest, SRTD will also conduct workshops on biotechnology tests in seed variety, traits, and seed health at the conclusion of the workshop.

The AOSA/SCST consolidated exam will be held August 13 for purity and August 14th for germination.

These workshops are open to seed analysts from private and government seed testing laboratories.  Presentation of topics will be on a level appropriate for intermediate and experienced seed analysts.

Enrollment at each of the workshop will be limited to 18 participants due to the hands-on nature of the topics and one-on-one attention from the instructors.  Participants from non-government laboratories will be charged a fee of $160 ($32 per day).

For more information about these seed schools, please contact Botanist Pattsy Jackson at pattsy.jackson@ams.usda.gov or seedservice@ams.usda.gov.

2-25-15 --- Constitution and By-laws Vote Clarification

We are receiving feedback regarding the proposed changes to the SCST Constitution and By-laws.

Under the RST and RGT examination requirements, an additional requirement for taking the examinations is being proposed.  The proposed change requires that an individual be an associate member of SCST for two years prior to taking the examination. For those taking the examination this year (2015) and next year (2016), the SCST board is operating with the understanding that these two classes of candidates will be grandfathered in and not follow the proposed new guidelines.  To summarize, 2017 will mark the first year that the examination and participants will operate under the proposed constitution and by-law changes.

Remember to vote on the Constitution and By-laws changes:
Click here to review the proposed changes.

You have until March 19th to vote on the proposed changes. Click here to cast your vote.

Thanks and feel for to call the SCST Administration Office with any questions:

2-20-15 ----  Northwest Region Seed Count Referee:

Comparison of Hand Counts and Mechanical Counts On Onion and Carrot

The Northwest Region is conducting a  referee to compare seed count results on the crops Onion and Carrot. There are a limited number of seed samples so participants will be honored on a first come first serve basis.  (Please note the lab requirements for eligibility.)

Purpose:
1 - To establish a standard protocol for the manual seed count of carrot and onion
2 - To establish a protocol for electronic seed count of carrot and onion
3 - Establish seed count tolerances for the above crops

Lab Requirements: In order to participate in this referee, labs must meet the following:
1 – Have an analytical balance with four decimal place weighing capacity (0.0001 gram)
2 – Have an electronic seed counter calibrated for the carrot and onion.
3 – Routinely conduct seed counts on either or both carrot and/or onion.

Electronic and Manual Count Methods:
1 – Count 8 replicates of 100 pure seed units, weigh each replicated to four significant digits and enter the weight of each replicate on the worksheet provided.
2 – Total the weight of the 8 replicates and calculate the number of seeds per pound.

Please contact Terry Dunfield at: tdunfield@sakata.com to receive your sample with complete instructions and recording sheets. Samples will be mailed as soon as request is received. Data is due back by April 15th.

Your participation will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Northwest Region

2-19-15 ---- SCST Proficiency Test Deadline Extended

There has been very poor turnout for the completion of the SCST proficiency test.  Approximately  only 25% of the samples sent out have been completed.  Due to the low completion rate we are extending the deadline until April 15th for both the written exercises and the marigold germination.

We encourage you to please participate.  The results are usually reported to our affiliate associations to show the uniformity amongst analysts.

If there are any problems with the condition of your sample when you receive it, please let us know as well so we can send a new one out.

Thank you in advance for your participation and to help make the organization better.
